This is the current system that is on the market. Built by the Lilly Corporation it is commonly issued to diabetics by doctors across the country.
Some problems are:
-
Difficult to read instructions
-
It takes focus and a steady hand
-
Does not account for low light or night time use
-
Requires practice to use and previous training

Some early development in SOLIDWORKS. I was exploring with early internal mechanism.
Exterior protective case. For diabetics on the Go
Final Product

The end result was simple and effective. A two chambered needle separated by a small rubber stopper. This allowed the two components to be carried and moved together in one unit. No needles. No finicky thin line vector instructions. Most importantly of all, only 3 steps when someone’s life is on the line.
As the injector is pulled from the outer case the main plunger is pulled in reverse creating negative pressure in the Rear chamber
The negative pressure pulls the rubber stopper out of place allowing the fluid and the powder to mix.
The pull tab on the side of the pen is similar to a milk carton
As you pull the pen out of the case it primes itself and the glucagon begins to mix
The pen is now able to be used on the patient

INJECTOR
This project began as a request from our professor to find a medical product that could use a redesign or to find a hole in the medical device market that we could fill. I had recently returned from a trip from Colorado when my little brother had fallen early in the morning after going hypoglycemic. I woke up to screams and blood as he had gone through a coffee table and broken a lamp. He was unconscious, seizing, and bleeding when I arrived on the scene. Testing his blood I realized he had extremely low blood sugar. Rushing to find his glucagon injector I had to dump his entire backpack out to find it then I opened it to find a syringe and a vial that held the life saving medicine. After 4 minute’s of struggling to use the system I was able to administer it to him and save his life. This left me shaken and angry that someone could ever think this was the right way to package and administer this drug thus began this project.
